Bruce Bickford in LA
This Sunday night the 24th, and on Tuesday the 26th, The Cinefamily is hosting amazing screenings of the work Seattle based animator Bruce Bickford. Plus, Bickford will be in attendance both nights. These films are hard to find, and totally worth checking out. There's nothing like them, the work of a real singular vision. Here are the full press releases, go, you will not be disappointed:

The title is not an exaggeration. Bruce Bickford's art -- a hallucinatory stop-motion amalgamation of Peter Pan, Ray Harryhausen, and The Wild Bunch -- is nothing short of amazing. Frank Zappa first used the incredible talents of self-taught claymation wizard Bickford as visual companions to his music in the film Baby Snakes, and continued this collaboration in The Amazing Mr. Bickford. On the film's original VHS cover, Zappa exclaimed, "Bruce Bickford is a genius!...Few other home video products can compare with the years of effort and attention to detail contained in less than an hour of The Amazing Mr. Bickford. It is a show that will be watched again and again, freeze-framed, and gasped at for years to come." Bruce Bickford will be in attendance for a Q&A after this incredibly rare screening.

CAS'L AND OTHER UNRELEASED FILMS BY BRUCE BICKFORD

While the greater mass of animator Bruce Bickford's work seen by the public consists of the films he made while working for Frank Zappa, he never stopped working, either before or after his employ. We will screen some of Bruce's early Super-8 experiments as a teenager, as well as his unfinished 45-minute opus Cas'l, the inspired result of years of solitary work, featuring a dark, tripppy live score by L.A. DJ The Gaslamp Killer. Also, Bickford will perform on of his "blues raps", with musical accompaniment by Gerry Fialka.

Brian Roettinger works primarily as a graphic designer under the moniker Hand Held Heart. His first solo exhibition features a series of collages and sculptures borne primarily of Euclidean geometric triangles, utilizing vibrant neons and shades of black. Roettinger's collages are playful and intuitive kaleidoscopic experiments in perception, referencing early work of the Constructivists and Bauhaus movement, with a psychedelic sensibility. The collages' juxtaposition of complimentary colours conjures a sense of three-dimensional depth and vibration, while Roettinger's vacuum-packed neon, malformed, cone-like shell sculptures-filled with an array of mixed-media-are simultaneously unpredictable and controlled.
Roettinger is most widely known for his album cover artwork for bands like No Age, Liars and DFA1979, and for books, like Jason Rhoades' Black Pussy Cocktail Coffee Table book for the David Zwirner Gallery in New York and Rosson Crow's Night at the Palomino for Honor Fraser Gallery in Los Angeles. He is currently the art director for the Southern California Institute of Architecture. In February of 2008 he was awarded the 2007 Album Designer of the year by Rolling Stone Magazine.

Peter Sutherland Book Launch - Muddy Treads
On Thursday, August 14, 7:30, there'll be a book launch for 'Muddy Treads', a new book of photography by Peter Sutherland
to be published by SF's Seems Books
Sutherland will conduct a slide show and show movie clips about the making of the book, as well as provide commentary and Q&A. Family will be giving away 100 signed limited posters by Sutherland that look like this:
Peter Sutherland has released several publications and films, most recently Buck Shots (powerHouse Books), Tierney Gearon: The Mother Project (Zeitgeist Films), and Game (Nieves), as well as contributing regularly to Vice, and i-D magazines. His work employs some of the techniques of traditional documentary photography to capture the hidden beauty of ordinary objects and everyday situations.
Sutherland has shown in group exhibitions at Rivington Arms/NY, Guild and Greyskull/NY, Circleculture Gallery/Berlin, V1 Gallery/Copenhagen and the travelling Tiny Vices show, currated by Tim Barber (which will travel to Hope Gallery in October). His solo exhibitions have been on view at Someday Gallery/Melbourne, MU/Eindhoven and Gallery White Room/Tokyo.
About the book:
There was a large chunk of land behind my junior high school known as “The Hills.” It was an unclaimed no man's land, where you could do whatever you wanted. There were strange half built sheds, bags of lawn clippings, some illegally dumped furniture, and the occasional dead animal. Locals would go there to drink beer, burn stuff for fun, and drive four wheelers on the hills, some of which were steep and untracked. There were arched tracks left behind by motorcyclists on the hillsides where they had attempted to ride over the highest point (usually a stump). There was a muddy pond and twisted-up sage brush; all which was hidden from civilization. The edge of the land was the closest possible point to the high school where the kids could smoke. It was also the only place for them to go if they had skipped class and didn't own a car. One day I was back there after school riding my bike (I was 12) and I saw a group of about eight stoners from the high school. They had discovered an abandoned jeep! They pushed it up a massive dirt hill and were taking joy rides in it. It was bouncing over rocks at high speeds and kicking up dust without the sound of an engine. It was probably the most unsafe operation I had ever seen in my life but I could see the expressions of pure joy on their faces. It's one of my favorite memories from that time and somehow everyone survived. I like empty plots of land like that one. There is always something messed up about them that keeps them from being developed and there's a special kind of freedom that allows for stoners to go four wheeling in abandoned jeeps. The entire state of Alaska feels like a more pristine, grown-up version of one of those areas and everything about it is just a bit too rugged and crazy for the masses. Many of the photos in this book were taken in Alaska. The others are from California, Colorado, Utah, and Vermont. (2006-07)
