Tomorrow night Weirdo Dave will be conducting a slide show at Family for his new collection of the zine Fuck This Life, published by OHWOW. Here's some highlights from a great INTERVIEW
“Sometimes if I read the police blotter I won’t even leave the house, I’ll be so fucking scared. This is what people do? They’ll lock you in a car and try to light you on fire. People will cut you up, gut you, leave you in a bathtub, and smoke all your cigarettes. It’s like the more you know the more you get scared of the world.”
"This is really for people who have bad days. Like, Fuck this life. Seriously. This came about after having so many days where it’s not even like fuck the world, because the whole world is all right. It’s this life. Every day, there’s a point where I wouldn’t mind if I were dead. Right? Every day there’s a part where I wouldn’t mind if I was just erased, right now."

This Natural World is about the world one truly occupies, nurturing the everyday, and recognizing what joys and greatness can be reaped. Cali says: “Looking at the same thing everyday, the same things over and over again, they can look different each time. This is a show about how one perceives their surroundings, about loving where you live."
Cali obsessively collects photos of mildewed mattresses, traffic cones, and abandoned shopping carts like they’re exotic flora and fauna. His collages depict stunning alien landscapes, images taken from nature, cut up and skewed: the familiar becomes foreign, offering something new.
“This Natural World looks at our landscapes and our nature. Forgotten shopping carts and trash is as much a part of our environment as palm trees and the pacific,” Cali says. “This is a love letter to home, to making your own reality.”

Michael Schmelling's 'Atlanta' Launch
Between 2007 and 2009, Schmelling and his collaborators gained unprecedented access to the underground hip-hop scenes (Gucci Mane, Shawty Lo, The-Dream) bubbling beneath the city’s surface and the lives of the young musicians and fans at its core. In a stunning series of black and white photos, he captures the heretofore-undocumented teen party scene – alcohol-free parties catering to the underage crowd, typically thrown by promoters in office parks after dark.
“There were a thousand YouTube videos of kids dancing in their living rooms, beats and songs were being made on PCs and uploaded to SoundClick or SpitYoGame. Something new was happening. And something new kept happening.”
Sanneh puts things into historical perspective, describing how Atlanta replaced New York City as the hip-hop capital “by default – the place where you could hear the next hit first, the place where kids and grown folks alike still seemed excited about hip-hop, the place where you could get the best mixtapes” and taking readers inside its many subgenres."
Michael Schmelling's last book, The Plan (J&L Books) documented hoarder's apartments around New York. The Week of No Computer was published by TV Books and Schmelling's work is regularly featured on tinyvices.com
